Welcome to Northwest Cycling Club (NWCC)
Northwest Cycling Club (NWCC) is a volunteer-based, non-profit organization which promotes the social, competitive, recreational, philanthropic, and health aspects of cycling through education, club rides, and club meetings. Northwest Cycling Club was formed in November of 1986. Since then the club has grown from approximately six members to an average annual membership of over 400. We proudly have held five titles for USA Cycling’s Club of the Year.
MEMBERS
For those just starting to explore group rides or for those who want a casual pace, we recommend our Saturday Coffee Rides. Check out the Thursday night Spring Creek Greenway rides, too. For those ready to tackle something longer, and faster (maybe even a lot faster), come out to the Hockley Community Center on Wednesday mornings and/or Zube Park on Saturdays.

Zube Saturday Refreshments
Feed people and hang out, a time-tested way to build community. If you are already coming to Zube on Saturdays, the extra time commitment is minimal. So is your expense since the club reimburses our grub-bringers. Join in and see tired riders smile! Click the button below for details.
Zube No Drop Ride Leaders
Remember your first few group rides? Maybe you were wanting to meet people, get strong, and learn more but were uncertain how. Now that you are more experienced, here’s your chance to share your knowledge and love of cycling. The No Drop Leader is responsible for leading the No Drop Group on the 25-mile route along US 290 business to the Chevron at 35515 U.S. 290 Waller, TX 77484 and back. Riders are expected to average 13 mph in good conditions though may need help with simple mechanical issues. This is where you’ll also teach group riding skills and etiquette. The 2023 Katy Flatland Century
The 2023 Katy Flatland Century bike ride will be held on Sunday July 16, 2023. The starting point is Royal High School located at 34499 Royal Road, Brookshire, TX 77423.
This fully supported ride is one of the Houston area’s oldest rides and is presented by Northwest Cycling Club. Four different distances/routes are offered, including a 24 mile route, a 54 mile route, a 74 mile route, and a 104 mile century route. This fully supported ride is one of the areas favorite rides.

NWCC Supports Waller ISD’s Annual Back to School Fair
NWCC’s President Geoff Donnelly and club members were present at HCC this morning when Adela Cornejo of Waller ISD received a check of $1000 from NWCC to support Waller ISD’s Annual Back to School Fair, which provides school supplies to children from low-income households.
About 1,000 students will receive backpacks full of pencils, notebooks, scissors, erasers, crayons and more from the sponsors of the Fair, which has a target of $10,000. The cost per student is approximately $10 and NWCC is delighted to help the local community’s young students.

Donation to Support Bike Palooza
Barbara LeBas Wu, Sabrina Strawn, Carl Grasshoff, Robert Patin and myself were delighted to present a check for $500 on behalf of NWCC to Christy Jones (also a club member), the Education Director of Mercer Botanic Gardens at the Bike Palooza this morning. The event was designed for young children and teenagers who are interested in cycling, with a mountain bike ride for teenagers and pre-teens, and a little skills course for the even younger kids. Our donation will help pay for next year’s palooza.

Presentation to Stephanie Esquivel for Essay on Cycling
Geoff Donnelly and were delighted to present NWCC’s sponsorship award to Stephanie Esquivel of Waller High School at their Class of’23 celebration last night. Stephanie’s essay on why cyclists and motorists should share the road was adjudged to be the winner by the educators at the school. We’ll see if we can get it on our website.
Texas MS150 Club 300
The Texas MS150 was held April 29-30, 2023. The event is the biggest fundraising activity for the MS Society. If you are in the top 300 fundraisers you are made a member of “Club 300” and received special recognition.
One of the Club 300 recognitions is a personalized Porta-Potty at the following year’s event. Congratulations to the NWCC Club President and Club 300 member, Geoff Donnelly, for raising $6,059.00 for this important charity last year!
Bike Night at Circuit of the Americas
Returning March 7th
Cruise COTA’s famed stars and stripes in a stress-free environment without the worry of city traffic while admiring fantastic sunset views of COTA’s signature Observation Deck and Austin skyline. After the evening ride concludes, cyclists can replenish and recharge with an ice-cold drink, mouth-watering refreshments and great conversations and camaraderie with fellow riders.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for kids.
Presentation to the Greater Houston Cycling Foundation
VP Amy, Treasurer Troy and I had the pleasure of presenting a cheque/check for $750 to Carl Jones and his gang at Alkek velodrome on Monday evening, April 10th.
This was unbudgeted money that had come to us after a kind cyclist donated the TT bike he was no longer using for us to sell. Member David Harman did a great job in selling it for an unexpected sum, enough for us to give this amount to Carl and his folks, and have some left over for another deserving cause close to our hearts (photo of that one coming later).

Presentation to Wendy Larsen for Race Across the West
At the NWCC Club Meeting on February 7, 2023, during which the 2023 Budget was rolled out to those in attendance, a presentation was made to member Wendy Larsen who is racing in the Race Across the West in June. The donation of $500 will help Wendy cover some of the costs for her support team. She is screening potential crew persons, with priority for a woman with ultra or cycling experience. Good luck, Wendy!

Northwest Cycling Club Benefits
The Northwest Cycling Club (NWCC) was founded in 1986 and continues to be a part of the cycling community in Houston, TX. We are here to support cyclists from beginners to racers, with something for all ages!
NWCC has something for every type of cyclist, from casual riders to racers, elementary school kids to grandparents. We ride on the road, in the dirt, and everywhere in between. You’ll find us on the roads and trails in the Northwest Houston area, and on trips all over Texas and surrounding states. We are one of the largest cycling clubs in Texas.

Train and Get Fit!
Frequent short rides are more effective than infrequent long sessions. If you only have three hours to spare per week you will be able to improve your fitness. To keep progressing and improving your fitness, you ideally need to be riding your bike every two to three days, even if it’s just a short trainer workout. The minimum you can get away with and still see significant fitness gains is three rides a week.
