NWCC Saturday Coffee Ride
The Coffee Ride is...
Paced Socially - we typically roll at 12-13mph but will accommodate you at your level of fitness; we're here to have fun, not to train fitness and we are absolutely NO DROP.
Diverse - We frequently have riders spanning four decades of age differences and half of our participants are female; we have racers, mountain bikers, and new riders on any given week; this ride doesn't have a typical type of rider and we're happy to have you at any skill level or level of fitness/experience
Approachable - You don't need to have a super expensive bike, stylish Lycra, and amazing fitness to do this ride, although we have people who have all that, too. We ride 11 miles before we break at the shop and we never get more than about 2.5 miles from the start, so you can join us no matter how fit you think you are--it's easy to cut it short if needed and we promise that's acceptable and you won't feel embarrassed to do it. We WANT you to come join us, even if you've never done 11 miles in your life. After the break at the shop we ride another ~8 miles, again all in close proximity to the start. We have someone at the front and back of the ride at all times making sure everyone is doing well throughout the ride.
Caffeine-Optional - Don't like coffee? No problem! Just Love (the shop where we stop) has all sorts of food and non-coffee beverages. Some of us love coffee, some of us just love hanging out. You don't have to miss this just because you're not a coffee lover.
A Learning Opportunity - Never done a group ride? No worries! We can teach you, in a super safe and friendly environment, the skills and communication you'll need to progress to some of our club's (or any other group's) faster or training-oriented group rides. This is a great opportunity every week to come and meet people in the club. We'd love to have you.
There are no restrooms open at Wildwood Elementary where we'll begin, but the coffee shop where we'll eventually take a mid-ride break is only a few hundred meters north of the school and is open before we roll out.
Helmets are required. You don't need to be on a specific type of bike, so long as you can ride safely and keep with the group. New riders in the club, even those new to group riding, are welcome.
You can see an example of the approximate route on this Strava activity from when we were piloting the ride:
Questions? Reach out to the ride leaders - email them at coffeeride@nwcc.bike.
¹ What does "no-drop" mean? The group or ride leader will not leave anyone behind, whether it is because the rider is struggling with pace (can't keep up), has a flat tire, or anything else. We'll wait up and make sure that everyone rides together.
HEALTH GUIDELINES FOR THIS EVENT

If you have been exposed to someone with COVID-19, been advised to get tested, or been advised to quarantine, we expect you not to ride in any of our group rides until the quarantine period has passed.

DOs
- Helmets are required.
- Obey all traffic signals.
- Ride predictably and smoothly.
- Call out all hazards.
- Use hand signals and call out your intentions, when you are turning, slowing, and stopping.
- Call out vehicles as they approach, “Car back” / “Car up” “Car left / right”
- In double pace lines, roll off one at a time so there will not be four abreast at any time.
- When passing other riders and groups, pass on the left and always call out "on your left."
- Communicate with riders in your group who may be pushing the speed of the group beyond the group's expectations. Ask them to slow down / speed up and/or move to the next group / drop to the group coming up.
- If you are new to group riding, whatever your estimated average speed, we highly recommend starting in the no-drop group, which will be called last.
DON'TS
- No earbuds, headphones, speakers or phone usage while cycling in any pace group.
- No using aerobars in the paceline.
- No overlapping wheels.
- Do not assume that the average speed of your ride will fall within the speed noted for each pace group except for the no-drop and 20+ groups. Groups may average a faster pace, especially on downhills or with a tail wind. On the other hand, the pace may be slower in poor riding conditions, climbing hills or into a headwind.
