Road Cycling – The NWCC Saturday Zube Park Ride

For over 25 years, 52 Saturdays a year, rain or shine, 75 to well over 200 road cycling enthusiasts converge on the parking lot at Zube Park in far northwest Harris County.

Historically, NWCC has supported this tradition by providing refreshments and a ride start. Since this is a public and not a club ride, we cannot require membership or waivers in order for riders to participate. NWCC strongly encourages participants to wear emergency contact information in an easily found location, such as on a Road Id bracelet.

Ride at the level of your own ability, obey traffic laws and be mindful of hazards. Learn and use your group riding etiquette, especially by indicating and calling out obstacles and rolling off the lead one at a time in double pacelines. Several well known sites have information on pacelines (Global Cycling Network, roadbikerider.com, TrainerRoad, TrainingPeaks).

By megaphone, the Ride Starter welcomes everyone, gives a few Club announcements, then calls out the pace groups, which include 18-20 mph, 16-18 mph, 14-16 mph, and “No/Low Drop Group”. Pace groups will ride on well-paved, quiet country roads in Harris and Waller Counties.

The Zube Park rides are a great way to check out the club and road cycling before you join. That’s because you don’t need to be a club member to come along for the ride. We do expect you to abide by all traffic laws, wear a helmet, refrain from using headphones or earbuds, and follow instructions from the ride leader.

When you get back to the park, the Club will have refreshments waiting for you. Make new friends while enjoying some cold watermelon, Gatorade, cookies and pickle juice.

The No/Low Drop Group

Road cycling with an approximate 13mph+ rolling average (which may vary based on wind, group, etc) that will ride a distance of roughly 25 miles/40 kilometers.

  • This group is new-rider friendly, and teaches and reinforces group-riding skills, safety, and etiquette. NWCC makes every effort to have ride leaders for no drop every Saturday, however, the no-drop ride may be canceled in bad weather. Check the Facebook group, Northwest Cycling Club activities, and the ticker at the top of the NWCC homepage. In addition, we are dependent upon volunteer ride leaders and sometimes other commitments may take precedence for that volunteer.
  • The route may vary, but the common route for this ride can be seen here: https://ridewithgps.com/trips/2926868

The 14-16 MPH Pace Group

The 14-16 mph road cycling group expects riders to have basic, requisite group riding skills (know how to ride safely in a pace line, communicate, rotate off the front, etc.) and most commonly rides a route that is slightly over 40 miles/64 km.

  • This is NOT a no drop ride; riders are expected to be able to maintain the group pace or they will be dropped, and riders off the front will not be chased (the group does stop for mechanicals flats).

The 16-18 MPH Pace Group

The 16-18mph road cycling group has the same expectations as the 14-16mph road cycling group but is designed as a bridge up to the faster group.

  • This is NOT a no drop ride; riders are expected to be able to maintain the group pace or they will be dropped, and riders off the front will not be chased (the group does stop for mechanicals flats).
