** 2022 Bluebonnet Express Bike Ride Update **

Wow, what a Sunday and a great day for the Bluebonnet Express bike ride sponsored by the Northwest Cycling Club. We had 1125 registered riders to participate in the bike ride and the weather was perfect except for the usual wind that we get in March. The riders didn’t seem to mind as they came back to the pavilion to get some great pizza served up by Backdoor Pizza in Hockley.

The day started with Dave Harmon’s Parking Team doing an excellent job in directing and keeping an orderly and efficient procession of cars to the back parking lot at the fairgrounds. Well done and a big thanks to your team. They allowed to riders to have plenty of time to get checked in before the ride started. Our Registration Team did an outstanding job in getting roughly 600 plus bike riders through the packet pick up and sign up. That was some terrific work on their part.

Our Corner Workers were the bomb, with costumes and cowbells to welcome the riders on the course. I had a lot of bike riders stated how much they enjoyed that and how enthusiastic the worker’s were. Rest Stops served by two Scout Troops did a wonderful job in preparing before the ride and serving snacks and hydration fluids during the ride. One Scout Troop stated this was their first experience in working a large bike ride like the Bluebonnet and said thy had a lot of fun and look forward to working the next ride we sponsor. Way to go to the Troops.

A big Cudo to Amy Smith, Rest Stop Coordinator in assisting the Scouts with all their needs and working with them when they returned to the fairgrounds to drop off unused food and supplies. Great Job Amy! Now the Lunch team, who managed to feed more riders than we ever expected and doing a fantastic job when we ran low and had to order additional pizza. I don’t know how you did it, but great job.

A huge thanks to Freddie Bautista for getting the officers who worked our intersections and help make the ride a safe event. Also, to James McCowan for providing bike mechanics to work our rest stops and help the riders with mechanical difficulties. Well done, James. Bruce Gilbert for providing the chain lube samples and securing the Elite hydration samples to go with packet pick up. Appreciate you stepping up to do so.

To Major Taylor Cycling Club of Houston, word cannot express how much the club appreciates the 40 plus volunteers who help fill vital positions to make this ride the success that it was. This is the first time that I can remember when another cycling club collaborated with NWCC to help with a ride. Well done MTCCH. Your enthusiasm did not go unnoticed and hope we can work together again very soon.

I just want to say that it’s our volunteers who ultimately make this ride one of the best and helps promote the good will that BBX offers. We could not have a BBX without you, so my sincere thanks for all your hard work, laughter, and smiles that I saw yesterday. Now it’s time to get to work on Katy Flatland Century Bike Ride and start the process all over again.

We cannot forget our Sag Drivers and SAG CENTRAL. Thanks to your team Robert, along with sidekicks Sid and Pete for another outstanding job. This is Robert’s last SAG Coordinator ride as well Sid. We will be sorry to see them step down but Pete has been working in the wings to step up and take over. I know we will see Robert and Sid somewhere else volunteering in another position.

The 2022 BlueBonnet Express Bike Ride

The 31st annual BlueBonnet Express Bike Ride was held on March 27, 2022 starting from the Waller County Fairgrounds in Hempstead, Texas, 45 miles NW of Houston. The weather was great and the ride was a huge success.

This fully supported bike ride is one of the Houston area’s oldest bike rides and is presented by Northwest Cycling Club. Three different distances/routes were offered, heading north of Hempstead then turning south, staying mostly on country roads. Cyclists encountered both flat sections and gentle rollers. This fully supported bike ride is only a few weeks before the Texas MS150 making it an excellent training opportunity.

The BlueBonnet Express is a MS150 Recommended Bike Ride.

The Bluebonnet Express bike ride is promoted and sponsored by Northwest Cycling Club. It is one of two bike rides that we organize each year to promote cycling in the greater Houston area. The proceeds from this ride go in various directions, are predominantly cycling related, and are naturally subject to the profitability of the bike ride.

Boy Scout Troop 202 uses this ride as their major fundraiser. We budget an amount for them each year and if the ride turns out more profitable, we increase the donation to them. The troop has volunteers, scouts and parents, manning our rest stops and start/finish area.

Northwest Cycling Club supports the following organizations for 2022:

  • The Spina Bifida SB-250
  • Boys and Girls Country
  • Houston Food Bank
  • Major Taylor – Houston Cycling Club
  • Hempstead High School Sponsorship
  • Local MTB Trails Preservation
  • Waller County Sherriff Office
  • Boy Scouts
  • Girl Scouts (we may also have them help us with rides)
  • Bike Houston

In addition to the above, NWCC sponsors weekly bike rides, open to not just club members but all cyclists – new and old – beginner to advanced. On a typical, good-weather day, it is not uncommon to see over 200 cyclists show up for our Saturday rides. Throughout the year, NWCC also organizes cycling educational classes and skills clinics and, of course, a host of other cycling related activities.

So, as you can see, NWCC is all about giving back to the cycling community and for the advancement and education of cycling in general – from local to state and nationwide. It’s the funds from our annual Katy Flatland Century Bike Ride and Bluebonnet Express Bike Ride events that allow us to do these things.

Northwest Cycling Club (NWCC) is a tax exempt Sec 501- 3C organization.
