The Katy Flatland Century

The Katy Flatlands Century (KFC) is one of the most popular supported road bike rides in Texas. The ride typically hosts over 1000 riders and is put on by the Northwest Cycling Club (NWCC). This is a great “first century ride” for many folks.  This is a large well organized ride starting and ending at a local high school. It includes some suburban riding and some country roads. The ride course is roughly South to North and back. It’s not completely flat, the course climbs a few hundred feet as it goes North.

The weather in July is of course hot and humid but unlike other rides the Katy Flatlands Century bike ride allows for starting at or before sunrise. Great organization along with holding the ride on Sunday means low traffic. Lots of good hotels are very close to the ride so out of town riders are well provided for.

2023 Katy Flatland Century

This fully supported ride will offer 5 different routes – 32 miles, 38 miles, 55 miles, 62 miles (metric century), and of course the 100 Mile Century. The course begins in Katy and travels north through Brookshire, Monaville, and Pine Island. Be sure to prepare for HOT weather, and beware of the Buzzard!

The Katy Flatlands Century bike ride is promoted and sponsored by Northwest Cycling Club

The Katy Flatlands Century (KFC) is one of two bike rides that we organize each year to promote cycling in the greater Houston area. The proceeds from this bike ride go in various directions, are predominantly cycling related, and are naturally subject to the profitability of the bike ride.

Northwest Cycling Club supports the following organizations for 2023:

  • Suzannah Smiles – The SB250
  • Alkek Velodrome Youth Cycling
  • Boys and Girls Country
  • Houston Food Bank
  • Major Taylor – Houston Cycling Club
  • Waller County Sherriff Office
  • Waller Assistance & Restoration Ministries
  • Waller ISD
  • Walk to End Alzheimer’s
  • Boy Scouts of America
  • Royal ISD
  • Bike Houston
  • Waller County Fair and Rodeo

In addition to the above, NWCC sponsors weekly bike rides, open to not just club members but all cyclists – new and old – beginner to advanced. On a typical, good-weather day, it is not uncommon to see over 200 cyclists show up for our Saturday rides. Throughout the year, NWCC also organizes cycling educational classes and skills clinics and, of course, a host of other cycling related activities.

So, as you can see, NWCC is all about giving back to the cycling community and for the advancement and education of cycling in general – from local to state and nationwide. It’s the funds from our annual Katy Flatland Century Bike Ride and Bluebonnet Express Bike Ride events that allow us to do these things.

Northwest Cycling Club (NWCC) is a tax exempt Sec 501- 3C organization.

The KFC has taken precedence over everything the club has done for many weeks now, but we still found time to make a presentation to Brandy McWilliams of Waller ISD on Saturday during all the ongoing effort. Brandy is leading the the initiative to support Waller ISD’s kids with a Back to School Fair taking place on Saturday July 23. It will help students with “providing backpacks stuffed with supplies (glue sticks, pencils, crayons, folders, composition notebooks, scissors, erasers and more).” NWCC has contributed 10% of their target fundraiser.
