Back in the days when I was a mariner, we were berthing an oil tanker in the Arabian Gulf in summer in intense heat.  We went alongside at “2 a.m. in the morning,” and as the local pilot, an Arab, and I walked out of the wheelhouse to look over the side to see how close we were to the dock, he said “Wow, captain, it’s hot!”  Hot!  No kidding, but I think he’d be saying the same if he lived here in Houston!  Let’s all continue to be careful, let’s hydrate and not just with beer and gin!  Roll on the cool low 90s!

We have many activities coming up (see below), yet these do not reach many of our members  Let us know what interests YOU;  please take our quick NWCC meetings and activities survey.

Our Labor Day Ride is coming up on Monday, September 4th, starting at the east parking lot of the St Arnold Brewery, 2000 Lyons Ave, 77020; we roll at 8 am in various speed groups, including a No Drop group, on a social ride.  Food and your first drink are on us after the ride.  Details, including the downloadable route, are on the website here: Labor Day VP Ride  Please do load the route to your head unit if you can!

The September Club Meeting is on Saturday September 9th, at Julias Mexican Restaurant, 5402 Hwy 6 N, 77084, starting at 2.30 pm, with a short business presentation on how we’re doing at some time after 3 pm.  Come and meet some club colleagues, enjoy a chat or two and have grub and a drink on us.  Here’s the website:  September Meeting

Coming up in November we have the elections for the four Elected Officers of the club.  We will need a new club president for sure, but we also need your votes for VP, Secretary and Treasurer.  It’s an opportunity for all members to influence the direction of the club in 2024, and we exhort you to please vote via the electronic system we will use.  Various other Board positions will be available for anyone to help out with volunteering.  Remember; no volunteers eventually leads to no club.

Diary note for you all: the Holiday Party is booked for the afternoon/evening of Sunday December 10th at Eureka Heights Brewery.  We hope for an excellent turnout and to see as many of you as possible.

We have had a few new members asking about the “Welcome to Cycling” class we run for those less experienced in group cycling skills and basic maintenance; stand by for an upcoming date in late September when it’s slightly cooler than the boiler room at Hades Hotel.  Email the president at president@nwcc.bike if you have interest in this friendly and fun afternoon class.

Anyone interested in a Bikepack/Touring Weekend, the sort of thing which sees you riding your bike with some camping gear for maybe a three day weekend?  If so, our Safety Chair Steven Freeman is the man for you, or via the president at the email above.

Finally, the website is full of information about our upcoming rides and other stuff too – it’s worth a look.  Be safe, hydrate!  See you soon!
